The Hidden Oracle

The usual spoiler alerts....

Ok so yes one half of me says Rick Riordan is pulling out the Percy Jackson thing, but the other half of me is fangirling all over this new edition to my bookshelf!

I liked Apollo's view on the human world in general and the references back to actual Greek Mythology mixed in with Modern references Rick Riordan thought Apollo might have done. Like his whole trouble over Daphne and Hyanthesis and his realisations about himself.
    Although I didn't like the Snapchat, Facebook, Hashtag bits. It felt like they were just dropped in to try and please a modern audience and didn't flow with the rest of the story.
So, Hi Rick, Please can you not put any references like that in the next one? I prefer your old style!

I found that the new characters aren't very likeable. They don't have much going on except Apollo's kids and Meg and I don't know about anyone else but I didn't particularly feel very attached to any of them. However I am still in love with all the old characters that made an appearance, especially Nico di Angelo and all his funny conversations with Will Solace and the few glimpses of Percy Jackson we saw. Sad I know but you have to love Apollo's reaction to his apartment, mum, food, ego....
    And Leo Valdez with his metal dragon and ex goddess is going to be in the next book with a major part I'm so excited I have lost the power of punctuation and grammar who cares anyway Leo's back yay

    Even though I am not too keen on the new characters, I love the whole new tri concept thing!
I have heard people say that it doesn't make sense and "wait, the whole Gaia thing was because of some past their time emperors?", but I think it wraps everything weird that ever happened in the world of Percy Jackson together nicely and awesomely and also opens up a hole in Rick Riordan world for him to write a whole bunch more amazing books!! *please, my whole career as a Percy Jackson fangirl would be over if he didn't and that would be tragic*.
   
Last of all I just feel that I should mention

These are a few of my favourite things (at the moment)

1. Dark purple nail varnish
    I own a Barry M Quick Dry in Sprint Finish and a Seventeen Lasting Fix nail Colour both gorgeous shades of dark purple. No matter how long I leave the colour on for, the colour still manages to never clash with what I wear.

2. Pride and Prejudice.
    The book, notes, manga, TV series, film, anything vaguely Lizzie Bennet or Mr Darcy related basically.

    I have said this before but this girls voice....aahh, wow.

4. Full length, Empire line, white dresses with long gloves.
    Notice the Pride and Prejudice theme continuing....let's just say, I really, really would like one. Not sure where I would wear it though....

5. The Durrells
    I actually need to know what happens.

• Does Larry's second book get published
• What happens to Lesley and his general happiness
• Does Margo see her gardener again - please say she does, please.
• Please don't bring the drunk captain back AGAIN. Just no.
• Did anyone else nearly die with cringing at the bit with the yacht?

• I feel for Larry about finishing all his books. Doesn't everyone?

10 random bits of my life this fortnight

Hi. Well. I am not going to be like one of those people who are all like "Oh my gosh, I am so so sorry I haven't posted, I feel awful, but I have just been so so busy, excuse, excuse....", because that just gets boring after a while. Actually I am very guilty of doing that when I forgot to post everyday in advent for Christmas 2015. But whatever. I am just going to say that I actually have nothing interesting to post except some random thoughts/reviews/life stuff that I have scribbled down or thought of over the past few days, with some equally mundane pictures. So I made it into a 10 things post. Congratulations in advance if you manage to read this all word for word.


1. I watched the ballet A Winters Tale a few days ago. Christopher Weeldon's choreography is always interesting and I love the whole classical feeling in Act 2, but not classical if you get what I mean. More contemporary with flexed feet in random places. Very technical terminology that!
Plus Edward Watson and Lauren Cuthbertson dance amazingly together, they create such feeling.

2. We were walking the other day when, surprise! We found a dead log that someone had painted....

3. Thoughts about - Cheerleader by Pentatonix

1. I never really liked the original of this song by OMI but with Pentatonix's fresh new take I love it!

2. The setting for the music video is awesome with just the right sort of vibe for the band and the song - Fresh, cute, funky taken old school.

3. Oh and one last thing I just HAVE to say: Kevin is literally a one-man band, I swear.

500 words

Phew that's over. 500 words I mean. The deadline has passed. Submit button been pressed and all is fine. Or at least until the whole "oh my gosh was my story really truly good enough" thing kicks in.
I am not giving any spoilers about what my story is about but I can tell you what it is not about.
Basically I had a story idea. It was going to be the most amazing book of all time....I wrote pages and pages on this subject and everyone I showed it to thought it was really good - not bragging or anything though. So when 500 words came around this year, I was like "why shouldn't I enter it, since it is my last year before I am too old, I may as well go out with a kabam".
I wrote it up on my laptop, tweaking it to fit the requirements. The only problem was that no matter how hard I tweaked or how much I cut out, the characters refused to be cut down to 500 words.
This has happened to me in every single year of me entering 500 words.
In the end I wrote a brand new story on a totally different subject, like 4 hours before the deadline.
It is good-ish (or at least I think it is?!) but it meant me giving up on a few awesome ideas from the last story, that I will tell you because all they will do otherwise is sit on my shelf;

A Jack Sparrow like character who is one of the leaders of a global gang of highwaymen in the sky.

A teenage stowaway and his lil sister

A girl power kind of tough girl figure who fly's after her kidnapped brother

An evil dude with many faces who has fingers in all the major cites of the world apart from one

Good guys being forced to be bad guys and hunt other good guys including the only two people
who could possibly stop this evil dude.

Magical ponies flying through the sky....

Actually no, not that last one. All those things don't sound very impressive when written down like that....but I promise they do all work together but it is too complicated to break down. *sorry*.

Goosebumps, that diner#3 and cupcakes

So I spent the day today mostly in the company of Jess, you know, the 10 things gal' from Fairydancer8. First we went to see Goosebumps at the local cinema, it was kinda creepy at some parts, but overall it was just insanely hilarious. Here are some of my thoughts about it:

1. There were far too many lil' kids there and far too many zombies.

2. If you have to fall off the sofa in the middle of the movie, please do it quietly?!

3. A magic typewriter....you're kidding me?

4. There’s a killer poodle, need I say more....

5. Champ, oh Champ, basically he is totally awesome, in scaredy cat/sidekick/says such stupid things

6. Hannah, Zach and Champ make an awesome trio. Think Luke, Leia and Han.... or maybe not like that actually....Think 3 teenagers fighting monsters, being all cool and making sarcastic comments along the way....or at least 2 of them were being funny on purpose!

We went to the diner after that, which obviously meant pictures! This diner has featured in two of my posts already, here and here, so I decided not to take any pictures of the wall posters this time.

We talked about a new feature so I will be revealing that pretty soon. *Oooo so exciting*!

We went back to her house and made cupcakes, and I figured it would be rude not to post some pictures of them. Some things we found out whilst making them.

    I only just discovered this guy, previously only recognising his name from when The Vamps murdered that Simon and Garfunkel song.
    But actually his songs are really sweet and surprisingly catchy!

    I never used to listen to McFly when they were big but there are a few of their songs that I listen to now, including this one, All about you, Star girl.... this one is really, really cute, but funny as well, I couldn't get that one bite out my head!

Lip scrub DIY and review

Don't you just hate January weather? Rain, getting up in the morning and get this: it's still dark, Rain, having tea and guess what: it's dark again, Rain, not wanting to go running because: it's dark.... Winter is not in my good books (unless there is snow or you are inside by the fire with movies).

Another thing that I am having trouble with at the moment is dry lips. Anyone else get this?
It is insanely annoying, not to mention painful and looks hideous! To help fight against the evils of dry lips, I use a ton of lip cream and such but this only really helps prevent more happening. What has already invaded my personal space is harder to get rid of. To get rid of flaky bits I use a lip scrub and THEN apply a layer of gloss or protective cream. I don't recommend using a scrub regularly in case of damaging your mouth with constant rubbing but when in need this is a good way of stopping
flaky-ness and making perfectly smooth lips. Wait does smooth lips sound weird?

I never used to use lip scrub until I was given one. It was a LUSH bubble gum lip scrub and I tried it, not because I needed to but because it smelled SO nice!! I didn't use it again though, it basically just sat on my shelf for a while until I actually needed it! Now I use it and it is amazing! I will recommend to anyone in need of a lip scrub and don't trust my advice below on making your own!

 

All opinions and pictures are my own.

 

You can just make a cheap one for yourself using ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard + it is so easy + works just as well as a shop bought one!

You will need:

Sugar
Olive Oil
Honey

How to make:

1. Put a tablespoon of sugar in a bowl. This is the grainy bit that will scrub your lips.
2. Cover with Olive Oil, this is to moisturise your lips and stop them from drying out, so don't add to much, just enough to cover the sugar. The mixture should not be too liquidy.
3. Now add a dribble of honey  to stick the mixture together.
4. If you want now  is the time to add flavouring. Peppermint extract, lemon, vanilla extract are all cool ideas but my favourite one by far is adding a small bit of coco powder. This will smell gorgeous!

Change the quantity's of ingredients you use by how much you want to make. I think doing it by eye is sometimes the best. It will keep in a cold place for a fairly long time, so you could make one big batch to last until spring comes once again and thaws our flaking lips.... drama queen!

Pouring into small containers and giving away as presents is a cute idea and people will certainly be grateful at this time of year! Tie a little ribbon round the top or create a personalised sticky label!

 

Now hopefully we can fight a bit better against the evil of dry lips (forever the drama queen!)!

Star Wars The Force Awakens

 

SPOILER ALERT JUST DON'T BLAME ME IF YOU  HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET, MWAH HA HA I KNOW SOMETHING YOU DON'T!! JUST KIDDING....

Woah. That is basically all I can say. STOP. It was just too awesome. FACT. But I did promise a review so here a few bullet points of things I noticed, references, general cool stuff....

• Did anyone notice that at the end Luke's hair looked pretty much exactly like Anakin's in the 3rd film? He suited it though :P
• "Ok the garbage will do" Oh my gosh it's the Millennium Falcon - the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy!!
• When Han was like "Is there a garbage chute, trash compacter" and Finn was like "yeah...."! Original trilogy reference alert + real funny
• Mark Hamill's 30 seconds of fame at the end - they gave him literally, what, 1 1/2 minutes + he didn't even speak, just stood there?!
• Oh come on I NEED to know who Rey's parents are!!!! Please let Luke be her dad....but then who would be her mum? Would they take Mara-Jade from expanded universe? I only know about EU and Mara-Jade and stuff from my brother, I'm not that clever!!
• Poe is officially awesome - "It' kinda hard to hear what your saying, you know with the mask, it just all sounds like, huh, huh...." - Oh my gosh, so funny!!
• I sort of expected Han to die, but it was still sad, like Kylo almost turned and then he was like, stuff it all and lightsabered him.... :( I think maybe it will be Rey who turns him in the end?
• Parts of Kylo Ren and Rey's fight were just like Obi-Wan and Anakin's
• General Hux - You get the impression that he's a bit OTT....just a bit....
• Finn had better wake up pretty quick otherwise he is going to miss out on all the action
• Did Daisy Ridley just rule it all or what?!
• Kylo-ren is my favourite character along with Poe Dameron and obviously Rey

To conclude, I REALLY REALLY CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONES TO COME OUT!!!!
In the meantime, I think I might have to see it again....

Girl Online and Girl Online On Tour by Zoella

My bookshelf is a jumble of words, stories and characters. Percy Jackson sits hand in hand with Anne of Green Gables. Eva Ibbotson gives Michael Morpurgo a hug, Harry Potter is sandwiched against Judith Kerr and Theresa Breslin. Noel Streatfeild is in the seat next to Annie and Goodnight Mister Tom.... you get the idea. I have had two recent edition's to my shelf's which is now in the only available space up against Charlottes Web. They are Girl Online and Girl Online On Tour by Zoella. I don't follow Zoella or watch her vlogs but I know who she is (who doesn't?!). When I first got told the plot -anonymous girl blogger goes to NYC, meets guy, all is well, gets back home only to discover he is a famous rock star with a girlfriend, but they get back together in the end - I was a bit sceptical about whether this was going to be any good. But I read it any way and I am so glad I did!!

    It is funny and makes you feel good. My favourite character is Elliot, I think everyone needs a best friend like him. I also like all the blog post that are interspersed throughout.

    In conclusion it was awesome.STOP.

But then I read Girl Online On Tour. I basically couldn't put it down. But not because it was so good, because everything got messed up and I had to find out if everything turned out ok! It does turn out fine so I guess in the end it is a good book, but I prefer the first one. If Girl Online got 4 stars then Girl Online On Tour gets 2 1/2 stars. I really hope there is going to be a third book.... please??!!

    I recommend both books for 11-16 year old girls but that is just a generalisation, anyone can enjoy them.

12 days till Christmas - My favourite Christmas film and sequels

My favourite Christmas film ever is most definitely the first Nativity! film from 2009 starring Martin Freeman, Ashley Jenner and Marc Wooten as the legendary Mr Poppy. It is just so heart-warming, festive not to mention insanely hilarious, the sort of film that is perfect for watching on a rainy afternoon in advent (We get a lot of those down here!) with hot chocolate and squirty cream in front of the fire.... just give me a moment to picture that scene....ok....where was I?
    Mr Poppy is basically every kids dream primary school teacher! Well, maybe not some of the things he does, but most of it, like making Angel Gabriel be like Elvis and bringing a donkey to school!!

    Although the adults are good and all that, the real stars are the children and all the funny personal things they bring to the film, like when they audition for the play and one of the kids (Ollie) holds his breath until he turns purple and then another (Bob) does this street/breakdance/hip hop dance sequence thing that literally makes you need the loo with all that laughing!!

    The way the film all comes together at the end with the big nativity at Coventry cathedral is so cool, the music and costumes and the music and dancing and the kids and the music.... I swear you will not be able to get that song "Sparkle and Shine" out of your head for months!!

The second film Nativity! Danger in the Manger, is also awesome. It is with most of the kids from the first film which is nice because you can be like, "oh I remember her!" or "oh my gosh it's the really cute little guy, just grown up a bit!!". The story does get a bit off the beaten track in the middle when they are lost, but not that much and it makes up for it at the end when they are at Song for Christmas and they sing that awesome number. My favourite bit of the whole film is when they get an encore and all the older pupils stand up and start singing solos into the dark and it is all magical.

Four stars for the magicality

 



Nativity! Dude where's my Donkey. Now this is a tricky one, cause as much as I loved the songs and the kids and the big Flashmob in the park in London, I also think it was all a bit unrealistic?? Plus I really loved the dancing and songs, but there were a few too many and the last one when they gate crashed the wedding was just a little bit cheesy.... though I did love the begging bit of that song when the girl stood up and sang then Lauren and some of the others joined in and then suddenly they were all singing their hearts out, but then it got cheesy. I think if some of the songs were cut out and some of the reminiscing bits when they took him to places from his childhood, it could have stood a chance at being as good as the first two but as it is I am only giving it;

2 stars because of the random bits

I recommend putting aside an entire day just for watching all these films in a row like a big musical, Christmassy, hot chocolate-athon, they really are worth it!!

13 days till Christmas - That's Christmas to me

Today it was my last dance lessons before Christmas and our teacher let us warm up and stretch to some Christmas music in body con! You have know idea how fun it is to hop up and down to at double time to "All I want for Christmas is you" by Mariah Carey!! I thought I would do a little review on my favourite Christmas album at the moment:

That's Christmas to me by Pentatonix

Pentatonix is an a cappella group of five people who make and cover songs. "That's Christmas to me" is their new album and it is full of covers of traditional Christmas songs that have been Pentatonix-ified and made to sound even cooler.
    The songs on the album include "Let it go" "Hark! The herald angels sing" and an amazing version of "Winter Wonderland" mixed with "Don't worry be happy" featuring Tori Kelly!!
    My favourite is The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy because it is such a traditional well known piece of music, yet when they perform it, it sounds completely strange and unfamiliar yet so awesome. That is the case with all of the songs on their album; you think you know the song "oh that old thing" but when you hear it, "woah".
    You get the idea, it is a totally awesome present for anyone, I would recommend anyone to have a listen to it at least and I am basically gushing all over it....

Children in Need - Pudsey bear cookies

Not donated yet? What are you waiting for, people, its tonight!! If you really want to donate, but haven't had the time to do your bake sale/sponsored silence/sponsored run/sponsored bathe in custard (bathing in custard, sounds soo fun, doesn't it!) then now's most defiantly the time

There are so many different things you can do to raise money for Children in Need and it is not only REALLY EASY it is also REALLY FUN and on top of that could there be a better cause??

Me and my family made some Pudsey cookies and some spotty cupcakes, which we sold to various friends and neighbours and I have to say, they were DELICIOUS and very, very CUTE!

We asked for donations and guess how much we got!!

Roughly £65!! All for Children in Need!!

A few years ago we did this and got about £40. We bought a special kit, with a Pudsey cutter and bunting and a tea towel and a recipe and what not.... So, we used the cutter again and these came out! The recipe is really simple, just, butter, sugar, flour and cornflour, in a bowl, turn into breadcrumbs, then squish together, roll out and cut out the shapes. The bandanna is ready roll icing with Smarties for the spots! Even if you don't have a bear cookie cutter you could print out a bear picture and cut around it, to make the shape. We made the cupcakes with just a simple plain cake mixture e.g. sugar, butter, flour and eggs with a icing sugar and water icing, again decorated with Smarties! The facial features, for the cookies are just black food dye applied with a cocktail stick or if you have a food pen, that's perfect.

Because children in need is tonight, you might have a bit of problem selling them if everyone has already donated, but you can only try!! Ask your neighbours for donations, you will hopefully get more than asking for a fixed price. Obviously make sure you know the people you are asking!!

Good luck with the cookies and remember even if you don't get much money from the cookies, donate something to children in need, which starts tonight at 7:30!!

Harry Potter jumper

I love this jumper. It says "Yay, I love Harry Potter!!" but in a subtle (ish) way.

I got it in Primark when I was shopping with a friend and I had a hard time deciding whether to buy this or a t-shirt that said on it

    "After all this time?"

"Always".

Only someone who had read the books/watched the films several dozen times would get that!

In the end I got the jumper (obviously) and I'm so glad I did, because not only does it look amazing, it is oversize on me so it is super snuggy as well!

You could wear with just jeans keeping the focus on the symbol or you could wear with a more stand out piece, like a patterned skirt with boots or coloured trousers possibly with a beanie hat.

 That was an fun shopping trip, because not only did I get an completely awesome new jumper, I also discovered Japanese pancakes filled with custard! Off the subject I know, but they were delicious!

Magnus Chase - Pro's and Con's + Trials of Apollo

Yes I know I'm late.... Sorry.... But Rick Riordan has a new book out (yee!!) Magnus Chase and the The Gods of Asgard Book 1: The Sword of Summer. I only got it last week and have been glued to it since to get it finished, but then I was too busy to write this review. But anyway here it is, finally.

I will now read through it properly and slowly and probably find tons of stuff that's vital to the story but I missed the first time! I do that kinda thing. I skim read it as quick as I can 'cause I need to know what happens and then I go back and -most of the time- find at least 5 hilarious/useful/generally awesome paragraphs I missed! At least that's what happened with his other books. Unfortunately I'm not entirely sure if that will happen this time, cause I found it stop started in coolness.
That doesn't make sense does it! I guess what I mean is that I did like the Sword of Summer (don't get me wrong on that) it's just that I felt it didn't flow properly.I was expecting it to be as good as Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus and it wasn't, so I was disappointed.

I was also expecting to like Sam more, for her to be the next Annabeth and be all awesome and funny and she was, but more in a kinda action girl way.
    My favourite characters defiantly include Hearthstone, TG, Mallory, Blitzen, Magnus and of course Annabeth! I really liked how Magnus was a hero but not in a complete Action, swords, fight fight fight kind of way.

One more thing; I really wish that we could have read the conversation between Annabeth and Magnus at the end! Would have been so funny!

So over all it was cool, not quite awesome but I would definitely recommend. 

But on a even more exciting note, there is a new book set in the Percy Jackson world coming out next May!! I’m not giving spoilers, mainly ‘cause I don’t know any *awkward pause*.
    Though I do know this; it’s about Apollo, Zeus is sending him down to Camp Half Blood as a human and this series (yes, I know series!!) is about Apollo trying to regain his godliness!

There have also been a bucket load of hints about a few “well-known” characters making an appearance- I’m crossing my fingers for Leo to be one of those characters!

    Did anyone else nearly spontaneously combust with excitement when they heard this news??!! Please say yes, otherwise I just made myself sound seriously sad!!

1. Two words; Harry Potter - speaks for itself - instant awesome-ness.
2. Jay, Big Bad Wolf, Green contact lenses, crazy good costumes and oh yeah some pretty amazing dancing.

4. Jeremy Vine turned Michael Jackson. Need I say more. It was amazingly hilarious.
5. Did I mention the Harry Potter theme? One more thing to say on that; Dancing on the table in heels. Kellie Bright is soooo cool. Star wars, now this

Ok you probably know this one but anyway's you have to admit it is pretty awesome! The video is soooo cool! I want a flashing all-in-one suit thingy too!!

Drive By by Train
I bet when you listen to this you will remember the tune and be like ooooohhhhh I remember this, I used to love this song, but you won't for the life of you be able to remember the title or band (at least that's what I did!) I also love Train's song Hey Soul Sister. That intro's so catchy, you can't stop singing it for weeks!
